FIRESIDE HANGOUTS: GHOST STORIES

Share a spooky tale around the fire pit

A boy and a girl are sitting next to a fire pit eating popcorn telling ghost stories

No matter the season, when the fire is flickering, it’s always a great time to tell a ghostly tale or two. Here are some tips on amping up the atmosphere during your next backyard campout.

Step 1: Choose your firelogs wisely.
Where is storytime happening? If you’re taking it outside, grab some of our easy-lighting
OUTDOOR firelogs. You can even roast campfire treats to provide comfort while things get spooky!

Step 2: Whip up your favorite drinks
When the sun goes down, so can the temps. You may want to ditch the afternoon iced tea for something a little warmer. Cocoa with marshmallows? Spiced cider? Maybe a toddy for the grownups? There’s nothing like getting cozy with a mug of something comforting.

Step 3: Battery-operated candles = instant ambiance
If you haven’t given battery-operated candles a try yet, do yourself a favor and stock up. You’ll be a believer in no time. Just switch ‘em on and you’ll enjoy that little extra ambiance to set the mood.

Step 4: Get creepy
Kick it old-school with some of your favorite tales from childhood, like
“Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.” Got stage fright? Queue up a podcast instead. We love “The Creeping Hour” on NPR – it’s a family-friendly show appropriate for everyone age 8 and up. We also got some serious shivers when we read these three ghost stories in Outside magazine.
